Our count on 28 September 2026: SeniorMatch's own Relationship status filter set to Widowed, with Location set to each province and territory in turn, men aged 50 to 99 with a photo, each list read to its end at a human pace, leaving out the suggestions the site adds below the results from beyond the filters. We counted from a woman's account seeking men, so the counts describe widowed men looking for women. The share is rough: it sets the count against our estimate of about 1,450 Canadian men visible, not against a count.

How we counted
On 28 September 2026 we went through SeniorMatch's member gallery one province and territory at a time, inside a Canadian member account, with the site's own Relationship status filter set to Widowed. We read each list to its end at the pace of an ordinary visitor, a screen or two at a time, and noted only what each card shows: age, city and province. We opened no profiles and kept no names or photos.
Three limits come with the count. First, we counted from a woman's account seeking men, so the counts describe widowed men looking for women. SeniorMatch only shows you members looking for someone of your gender, so we could not count widowed women. Second, relationship status is whatever members chose for themselves. The filter offers 7 choices (Single, Never married, Married, Divorced, Widowed, In a relationship, Separated), and a widowed man who picked Single or left it blank is not in our count. That makes 184 a floor. Third, the gallery only lists members active within about the last 180 days, the same limit as our wider count of all members.
One thing nearly threw our count off, and you will run into it too if you search this way. Below its results, SeniorMatch adds a second list headed "You might also like", with the note "Members beyond your filters, including those open to relocating or traveling to meet." Those members fall outside the filters you set, and where we looked, most came from other provinces. We counted only the members in the results list itself. Tomorrow: when you search by relationship status, stop reading at the "You might also like" header.
Where widowed men live
Ontario had the most widowed men by a wide margin: 67, spread over many towns, with Ottawa and Toronto (5 each) ahead of the rest. British Columbia followed with 38, led by Vancouver (7) and Kelowna (3), and Quebec with 34, where Montreal alone had 13. British Columbia came out ahead of Quebec, even though our 21 September 2026 sample of the newest profiles held 145 from Quebec and only 69 from British Columbia. Alberta had 17, most of them outside its two big cities: Calgary and Edmonton (4 each). Together the four largest provinces held 156 of the 184, or 84.8%.

The shares vary widely. In Nova Scotia and Saskatchewan, widowed men made up 23.4% and 25.6% of every member we had counted there a week earlier, far above Alberta's 9.7%. Across the nine smaller provinces and territories, 28 of the 178 members we counted in full were widowed men, 15.7%. Small counts swing easily, so treat those shares as rough signs of what you may find. Newfoundland and Labrador, Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut showed no widowed men at all, and Manitoba, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick showed fewer than five each. Tomorrow: if you live where the table shows few or none, set the province to No preference so the search covers all of Canada, and look for men whose profiles say they are open to relocating or traveling to meet.
Ages
The widowed men we counted were older than the site's newcomers. Their median age was 73, with ages running from 50 to 89. That is 7 years older than the median of 66 among the newest Canadian profiles in our 21 September 2026 sample, which is what you would expect, since widowhood mostly comes later in life.
By province, Alberta's widowed men were the youngest group, with a median of 69, and British Columbia's the oldest, at 75.5. We give ages only where a province had at least five widowed men; below that, a single age could point to one person. Tomorrow: if your age range stops below 73, it hides at least half of the widowed men we counted, so set the upper limit higher than you first planned.
Finding widowed members yourself
The Widowed filter sits on the Advanced tab of SeniorMatch's search filters, under Relationship status. Advanced filters are part of Premium, and the tab itself warns: "Advanced filters reset when your Premium membership expires." A free member can browse by age, gender and location, which gets you a province's full list of members but no way to narrow it to widowed ones.
If you use the filter, watch where the results end. Where nobody matches, the site says "No members found. Try broadening your search filters to explore more options!" and goes straight to its suggestions. Where some members match, the suggestions start right after the last one, under the "You might also like" header, and they look exactly like the results above them. We saw both on 28 September 2026: Newfoundland and Labrador, Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut brought up the no-match note, and in every other province the results ran straight into the suggestions.

Widow and widower sites
Before counting SeniorMatch's widowed members, we checked the sites built only for widows and widowers. On 16 September 2026 we tried 12 widow and widower dating sites, and on 28 September 2026 we tried them again. Both times, 4 of them returned server errors. Of the 8 that loaded, 7 were run by just 3 companies, which we read from each site's member-login footer.
When several widow-only names lead back to one company, the name tells you little about how many widowed members are behind it. We cannot count those members from outside, so we cannot say whether any of these sites has more widowed members than SeniorMatch showed us. Tomorrow: before you pay a widow-only site, scroll to the bottom of its login page and read who runs it.
Safety
Go slowly with anyone you meet online, on any site. In 2024, the newest year the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre has a full annual report for, Canadians reported $58.9 million lost to romance scams. Three requests should end a conversation on any dating site: money, gift cards or crypto, and a quick move to another app.

Can I search only for widowed members?
Yes, with Premium. Relationship status is one of the Advanced filters, and Widowed is one of its 7 choices. A free membership lets you browse by age, gender and location, which does not include relationship status. The Advanced tab also warns: "Advanced filters reset when your Premium membership expires."
Is SeniorMatch free for widows?
Joining and browsing are free, but a free member cannot start a conversation. In SeniorMatch's own words: "As a Standard Member, you cannot initiate or continue conversations unless the other person currently has a PREMIUM MEMBERSHIP."
